Melbourne Chamber Orchestra – Mozart/Salieri

Friday 22 July, 2022
8pm (doors open 7.15pm)
Yackandandah Public Hall

As any gossip magazine editor will tell you, a rivalry is more entertaining than a friendship. The film Amadeus has done much to embellish people’s idea of the composer Salieri. It’s true that in letters to his father, Mozart complained that Salieri was thwarting his ambitions. But over time, it’s evident that Salieri had no grudge against Mozart, championing his music.

While Mozart’s music is rightly regarded as the zenith of the period, Salieri’s music is still in the process of being revived. For this concert, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra unites two Mozart masterpieces, the ninth Piano Concerto, sometimes known as the Jeunehomme (performed by piano soloist Hoang Pham) and the light-hearted Symphony No 28, with an Australian premiere of a Salieri opera overture and his La Veneziana symphony.
